Today, on this International Day Against Islamophobia, the Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association (CMLA) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to a just, inclusive society that respects religious diversity.
We honor the memory of the six innocent men who lost their lives in the attack on January 29, 2017, at the Québec mosque:
Azzedine Soufiane
Khaled Belkacemi
Aboubaker Thabti
Ibrahima Barry
Mamadou Tanou Barry
Abdelkrim Hassane
We also remember the survivors and families who continue to bear the scars of this tragedy. This act of hatred reminds us of the critical need to combat Islamophobia and discrimination in all its forms.
As our panelists from the Remembering January 29 event reminded us, we must call out hate and Islamophobia when we become aware of it and support each other as fellow Canadians in order to advance a society where our fundamental rights are protected.
Today and every day, we call on governments, institutions, and society as a whole to remember and work to build a Canada where everyone can live in peace and security.
