CMLA’s statement regarding Ms. Sudine Riley’s testimony of an assault by Durham Regional Police while working in the Oshawa courthouse.

The Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association (CMLA) is deeply concerned regarding Ms. Sudine Riley’s testimony of an assault by Durham Regional Police while working in the Oshawa courthouse. Ms. Riley is a Black woman lawyer who was wearing a headscarf. Ms. Riley’s testimony raises serious questions about the treatment of racialized women within our justice system and within our profession.

We look forward to a full, independent, and transparent investigation and reaffirm the importance of accountability and public trust.
