Join us to discuss practical strategies for navigating mental health as racialized lawyers with Wilma Shim, Dr Terry Singh, and Sadaf Raja, in-person with lunch generously provided by Assist (Alberta Lawyers' Assistance Society) and venue generously provided by JSS Barristers. We look forward to a candid and informative discussion on mental health as experienced by racialized lawyers, resources, and strategies for success. 

Wilma Shim

Wilma Shim is a member of the Alberta Human Rights Commission and a sports law instructor in the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. She graduated from the Faculty of Kinesiology (UCalgary) in 2007 and the Faculty of Law (UCalgary) in 2010. Wilma was called to the Bar in 2011 in Alberta and previously worked for Alberta Justice as a crown prosecutor and barrister and solicitor for 10 years. Currently, Wilma is an LLM Candidate in the area of sports law and actively volunteers as a peer support volunteer with ASSIST, mentor with the Law Society of Alberta, University of Calgary Senator, University of Calgary Alumni Association Board Director, and Association of Women Lawyers Board Director. She currently serves as Chair of the University of Calgary Faculty of Law Alumni Network, University of Calgary Faculty of Kinesiology Alumni Network, and Chancellor’s Club Scholars Alumni Network. Passionate about Special Olympics, she has volunteered with Special Olympics Alberta since 2007, and has previously served as the Board Chair for the provincial organization. She currently spearheads the Special Olympics Calgary badminton program and is an AMC member for Special Olympics Calgary. Wilma is part of Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 under 40 Class of 2015 and is a member of the Order of the University of Calgary. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and three very active sons.

Dr. Terry Singh 

Dr. Terry Singh is the principal of Alberta Forensic Psychology, the largest office of psychologists specializing in Court-involved matters in southern Alberta. He is a registered psychologist with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, and was the first psychologist in Alberta to receive Board Certification in Couple and Family Psychology by the preeminent American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). Dr. Singh's areas of special interest include working with high-conflict families of divorce and separation, child custody evaluation, consideration of cultural factors in assessment and treatment, and the treatment of severe and persistent psychopathology.

Sadaf Raja 

Ms. Raja practices in the area of family law, criminal law and personal injury. Ms. Raja has appeared in all levels of courts in Province of Alberta.

Ms. Raja received her Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa in 2014 where she volunteered with Pro-Bono Students Canada with various organizations such as the John Howard Society of Canada and REACH Canada. Ms. Raja returned to her hometown of Calgary to article at a reputable national law firm. After working with two prominent law firms in Calgary, Ms. Raja started her private practice in 2019. Ms. Raja continues to work alongside best litigation lawyers in Calgary. Using her litigation abilities, Ms. Raja assists her clients receive the best possible results in all litigations matters. Clients love Ms. Raja’s down-to-earth approach attitude, on-point and clear advice. Ms. Raja is known to be dedicated to her clients, to understand what the client’s needs are, and then efficiently developing case around the client’s goals. This skillset is highly valuable for complex family law litigation matters. Ms. Raja has travelled and worked internationally, wherein; she has worked with the United Nations in Thailand and worked with EURAC in Italy. In her downtime, Ms. Raja loves travelling and spending time with her young family in Calgary.
